The sad reality of iit jee and neet student

The reality of JEE and NEET exams in India is stark and challenging. Every year, lakhs of students appear for these highly competitive exams, but only a small fraction manage to secure admission.  For JEE Mains, over 10 lakh students apply annually, yet only a few thousand secure seats in IITs, NITs, and other top engineering colleges. Similarly, NEET sees more than 20 lakh aspirants each year, but the number of seats in medical colleges remains limited, and only a few lakh students are admitted.

The Role of Kota

Kota is widely regarded as a hub for JEE and NEET preparation. Every year, lakhs of students move to Kota with dreams of cracking these exams. Families invest lakhs of rupees in coaching fees and living expenses, hoping to support their children’s aspirations.

 Droppers and Pressure

Many students relocate to Kota after completing their 10th grade, while others move there after 12th grade. Those who take a gap year after 12th to prepare again are referred to as "droppers." Often, these students come under significant family pressure. However, more than half of them struggle to adapt to the intense environment and return home within a few months.  Some students stay in Kota but stop attending classes due to the overwhelming schedule. The daily routine itself is exhausting. Classes operate in two shifts:

Morning shift: - Classes run from 7 AM to 1 PM, regardless of the weather.

Evening shift:- Classes start at 2 PM and end at 8 PM.

This relentless schedule includes classes from Monday to Saturday, with weekly tests on Sundays, leaving students with virtually no time for rest or recovery.

Struggles and Outcomes

Even those who manage to endure this demanding routine often attempt the exams multiple times, sometimes 3–4 times. Despite their hard work, many fail to clear the exams. While successful candidates are celebrated, those who don’t succeed are often criticized as "not being serious enough." Few people truly understand the pain and frustration of working tirelessly yet failing to achieve the desired results.

Conclusion

The journey of preparing for JEE and NEET is not only academically challenging but also emotionally and mentally draining. While Kota is known for producing toppers, it is also home to countless untold stories of struggle, failure, and heartbreak. Only a few students achieve success, while many return home with unfulfilled dreams and immense pressure, carrying the weight of their efforts and aspirations.
